Manor Profile
Oving, West Sussex· Box and Stockbridge Hundred· 1091 – 1857
Also known as: Woodhorn, Wodehorne
Woodhorne formed one of two prebendal manors in the parish of Oving alongside Colworth. Both were held by the prebendaries of Chichester Cathedral from early times, except during the Commonwealth, until the endowments passed to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1857.
Thomas Stapleton held the prebend of Woodhorne from 1558 but lost it in 1563 when he refused to deny papal authority under Elizabeth I. Peter de Wodehorne, presumably associated with this locality, appears in a 1215 charter when Prior Robert of Boxgrove demised a croft at Martinesgrave to him.
