Manor Profile
Oving, West Sussex· Box and Stockbridge Hundred· 988 – 1857
King Aethelred II granted Colworth to Leofstan in 988 with leave to bequeath it. The estate was conveyed to the see of Selsey. Two estates in Oving formed the prebendal manors of Colworth and Woodhorne, held by the prebendaries of Chichester Cathedral until the Ecclesiastical Commissioners took over in 1857.
A chapel at Colworth is mentioned in 1510, and was given as "the old chapel" to Theophilus Adams in 1583 with a piece of meadow called "Saint Georges meade." In 1325 Henry de Garland and Hugh de Warkenby were licensed to alienate lands for a chantry in the cathedral's St Faith chapel for Roger de la Grave. Called the "chantry of Colworth" in the cathedral, the chaplain had ceased functioning by 1441. The endowment was represented by the "Maryland" estate, leased to John Wiatt for 53s. 4d. in 1535.
