Manor Profile
Southwick, Hampshire· Portsdown Hundred· 1250 – 1768
Wanstead was a sub-manor in the parish of Southwick. The family of Wanstead held the land from the mid-thirteenth century. The holders owed the service of finding one man to serve for eight days in time of war at Portchester Castle.
John Wanstead died seised in 1453. His heirs were his sisters Agnes, wife of John Joye, and Joan, wife of John Kentyshe.
Sir John Dawtry held the manor by the same castle service at his death in 1495. He left a son Francis, who was under age. Sir Francis Dawtry sold the manor in February 1541-2 to Richard Bennett of Portchester and Agnes his wife.
Agnes Bennett settled the manor in 1548 on her daughter Margaret Tichborne. In 1558 it passed to her son John Maryner. Peter Maryner died in March 1614 and left the manor to his daughter Mabel, wife of Edmund Plowden. In the spring of 1615 Mabel and Edmund conveyed it to John Waller and Francis Plowden, evidently as a settlement.
From the early seventeenth century the White family held the rectory and advowson in Wanstead. Honor White's marriage to the Nortons transferred the holdings. Alexander Thistlethwayte and his wife Mary were seised of it in 1768. The manor has remained with the Thistlethwayte family since.
