Manor Profile
Soberton, Hampshire· Hambledon Hundred· 1216 – 1662
Also known as: Wallop
Wallop's manor in Soberton was probably derived from the Domesday holding of Henry the Treasurer. In the thirteenth century it was held de veteri feoffamento of Herbert Fitz Peter, who held of the Abbot of Hyde. The overlordship later transferred to the Bishop of Winchester, possibly in 1332 when William de Hattingley released all right to John de Stratford, Bishop of Winchester (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 257-268).
Richard de Wallop held in the reign of Henry III and recovered 40s. from Beaulieu Abbey for damage during the time the abbey had held the manor at farm of Richard, his father John and his mother Mabel. Richard died without issue and his brother Sir Robert Wallop succeeded, also childless. The manor passed to their nephew William Burton alias Wallop (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 257-268).
Richard Wallop, son of William, is mentioned in 1346 holding a fourth part of a knight's fee formerly held by Euphemia de Wallop. His son Thomas Wallop died in 1362 seised of a messuage, a carucate, 20s. rents of assize and 12d. in pleas and perquisites, held of Edward de St John as the manor of Wolverton for a quarter knight's fee service. Thomas also held 25 acres of the king's tenure paying 8s. 4d. to the sheriff of Winchester Castle, and meadows held of Isabel Wayte of her manor of Bere for 2s. per year. His heir John was aged eight (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 257-268).
John Wallop (grandson of the earlier John) died in 1486. His heir Richard died seised in 1503, held of the Bishop of Winchester. Richard's brother Robert succeeded and died without issue in 1535. Brother Stephen succeeded and his grandson Henry dealt by recovery in 1566. Sir Henry Wallop obtained a grant of free warren, court-leet and view of frankpledge in 1616. Henry died in 1642 and his heir was Robert Wallop (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 257-268).
Robert Wallop sat as a judge at the trial of Charles I and was excepted by Parliament at the Restoration from benefiting from his estates. He was sentenced to be drawn to Tyburn gallows with a halter and imprisoned for life. The sentence was executed on 30 January 1662. The king granted Robert's Soberton property to Thomas, Earl of Southampton, Anthony Ashley Lord Ashley, Sir Orlando Bridgeman and Sir Henry Vernon in 1661, empowered to sell for the benefit of Lady Anne (the earl's sister, Robert's wife) and Henry Wallop their heir. The manor was sold and was probably purchased by the lord of the chief Soberton manor in the early eighteenth century. The site is identified as Wallopswood Farm at the extreme east of the parish (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 257-268).
