The manor of Frendstaple followed the descent of Farlington until 1480. In that year William Gunter, brother and heir of John Gunter of Racton in Sussex, released his rights to Thomas Lovell and others as a settlement.
Arthur Gunter held in 1575. George Gunter and Mary Lady Gunter held in 1624. Their son Arthur Gunter died seised in 1637. Arthur's sister Mary Drewry died in 1639. Her heirs were her cousins Thomas Bickley, Constance Brigham, and Elizabeth Lewes.
No further records survive until 1820, when Stakes Farm was purchased by William Taylor for 5,020 pounds and the hamlet of Stakes Hill by John Hulbert for 1,200 pounds. At the date of VCH publication J. H. Hulbert of Stakes Hill Lodge held the property.
